Using Juristek
What is Juristek and is it free to use? +

Juristek is a South African legal directory and intelligence platform. Browsing attorneys and using the legal tools (prescription calculator, court finder, etc.) is completely free. ServeRight includes 15 free lookups per month for registered users — paid credit subscriptions are available for higher volumes. Attorneys and law firms pay a monthly fee to list on the platform.

Is the attorney information on Juristek reliable? +

Attorneys with the LPC Verified badge have had their Legal Practice Council membership confirmed by our admin team. We recommend always verifying an attorney's LPC standing independently at lpc.org.za before instructing them. Juristek is an information and referral directory — we do not guarantee the quality of legal services provided by listed attorneys.

How do I contact an attorney I find on Juristek? +

Registering a free client account (email + password, no card required) allows you to submit an enquiry form directly on any attorney's profile. The attorney receives your enquiry by email and will respond directly to you. Juristek does not facilitate payments or manage the attorney-client relationship — we connect you and step back.

For Attorneys & Firms
What is the Free Trial listing and how does it work? +

Every new attorney and firm receives 7 days of full featured placement at no cost — featured launch placement, enquiry form live, LPC badge active. No card required. After 7 days, the listing drops to limited visibility. A notification is sent at day 5 showing how many enquiries you received, so you can decide whether to upgrade before the trial ends. The free trial cannot be reused on the same email address.

Can I list as an individual attorney if I work for a firm? +

Yes. You can register independently and then link your profile to your firm, or your firm can invite you to join their listing. Your profile and your reviews always belong to you — they are portable and will remain with you if you change firms. The firm can display their branding on your profile, but cannot delete your profile or your reviews.

What is the correspondent attorney marketplace? +

Elite and Firm Elite subscribers can register as correspondent attorneys — offering their services to debt collectors, banks and credit providers who need a local attorney to issue summons or handle matters in specific magisterial districts. You set your own rates (or accept our suggested market rates) and choose which districts you cover. Instructing companies find you through the marketplace and send instructions directly.

ServeRight & Legal Tools
What does ServeRight do? +

ServeRight takes a South African service address and a claim value, and instantly returns the correct magisterial district, the correct court level, the assigned sheriff's full contact details, and the proper citation for use in pleadings. It also checks whether the instructing attorney's office falls within the 15km rule for the district. Each lookup uses one credit.

What is the 15km rule? +

In South African civil procedure, an instructing attorney must generally be within 15km of the court handling the matter, or instruct a correspondent attorney who is. ServeRight checks whether your registered office address falls within the magisterial district of the service address — if not, it flags that you may need to appoint a correspondent attorney. This is a guide only — always confirm compliance with the relevant court rules.

Are the legal calculators accurate? +

The calculators apply current SA legislation (Prescription Act 68 of 1969, NCA Section 129, Magistrates Courts Act jurisdictional limits) and are designed to be accurate reference tools. They are not legal advice and should not be relied on without verification. Complex matters — particularly where prescription may have been interrupted or where the NCA does not apply — should always be assessed by a qualified attorney.

Privacy & Data
How does Juristek handle my personal data? +

Juristek complies with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA). We collect only the data necessary to operate the platform. We do not sell personal data to third parties. Attorney and firm addresses are displayed publicly as they are public professional information. Home-based attorneys may opt for suburb-only display. Full details are in our Privacy Policy.

Summons
A court document that formally notifies a defendant that a civil claim has been issued against them. The defendant has a set number of days to respond.
Section 129 Notice (S129)
A statutory notice required under the National Credit Act before a creditor can take legal action on a credit agreement. Gives the debtor 10 business days to respond or arrange payment.
Return of Service (ROS)

A court order instructing a debtor's employer to deduct a monthly amount from their salary and pay it directly to the creditor. Commonly called a garnishee order.

Legal Practice Council — the statutory body that regulates all attorneys and advocates in South Africa. An attorney must be registered with the LPC to practice legally.
Sheriff
An officer of the court appointed by the Minister of Justice to serve legal documents (summons, warrants, court orders) and execute court orders. Each magisterial district has a designated sheriff.
Correspondent Attorney

In Duplum Rule
Once a debtor is in default, the total interest and charges that can accrue after default cannot exceed the outstanding capital at the date of default. This caps how much a debt can grow.
Debt Review
A formal process under the NCA where an over-indebted consumer applies to have their debts restructured under the supervision of a debt counsellor. A creditor cannot take legal action while a consumer is under debt review.
